As part of its Building Healthier Communities Fund (BHCF), Coastal Community Credit Union would like to congratulate the Comox Valley’s The SHED Tool Library & Makerspace Co-operative, for being selected as a recipient of $5,500 towards their initiative.

Every year, BHCF provides approximately $90,000 in support for community organizations that contribute to building healthier island communities.

These initiatives have long-term effects that support a broad range of people, are sustainable, and make an impact on one of our Island communities.

Coastal Community is excited to announce The SHED Tool Library & Makerspace Co-op as one of their many Building Healthier Communities Fund recipients.

With a strong focus on environment sustainability, The SHED Tool Library and Makerspace Co-operative, was incorporated in 2015 for the purpose of sharing tools, skills, and workspace.

The SHED is still in the planning and development phase and will eventually become a place where members can borrow tools, use the workspace and attend workshops. The funds will be used to construct a mobile tool library, or The SHED.

The existing group of volunteers has been meeting regularly to bring this project to fruition and additional volunteers are amalgamating often. The team has already acquired an 8x12 flatbed trailer, which they plan on using to construct the Tool Library.

The funding from Coastal Community will specifically be used to provide the trailer with new brakes and wiring, as well as providing materials to build the structure and complete the racking for the tools.

The members of The Shed Tool Library and Makespace Co-operative have a strong desire to reduce their footprint on the earth and have a strong belief in sharing over consuming.

They support re-creating, repurposing and repairing what already exists, rather than purchasing new, promoting a more sustainable life by consuming less.

“As a vibrant and socially conscious community, the Comox Valley is the perfect place to implement this initiative. The Shed will promote lifelong-learning and mentorship, in addition to community engagement and resilience to a tough economy and environmental change.

As a Building Healthier Communities Fund initiative, we are confident The Shed will promote economic development, support a broad range of islanders, and remain a sustainable program. We look forward to supporting our common goal of building healthier communities,” says Allyson Prescesky, Manager, Community Experience and Communications with Coastal Community Credit Union.
