Students at Valley View Elementary who participated in the May 9 Sale Day have donated half their proceeds to charity.

Kathleen Daneliuk’s class is donating $265 to YANA (You Are Not Alone), Chris Wulff’s class is donating $350-plus to the SPCA and Janet Meyer’s class is donating $385 to the Children’s Hospital.

BMO has contributed a further $350 to Children’s Hospital.

Before the event, the Grade 6/7 students were challenged to create saleable products from recycled and repurposed goods. The three classes received tips from Gayle Bates, the waste reduction educator at the Comox Valley Regional District, who helped them select, create and market ‘green’ products.

The Sale Day was part of a Junior Achievement British Columbia (JABC) program called Business of Our Own, where students choose, finance, market and sell a product of their choice within a four-week period.

Along with Bates, Courtenay professionals and business owners shared life and work experience with the students. They included Jenny Deters, Design Therapy; Erika Nessman, BMO; and Coralee Katzberg, Freedom 55.
