Said the Whale coming to Sid

The Sid Williams Theatre Society presents Juno Award winners Said The Whale on Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re really excited to have Said The Whale as part of our season,” said Tara Murphy, the Sid Williams Theatre Society’s promotions co-ordinator said. “We were lucky enough to find an opening in their busy schedule to get them over to the Island. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing two live shows and they do not disappoint!”

Winners of the 2011 Juno for Best New Group, Said the Whale is called “one of Canada’s most beloved indie-rock acts” by Music.com.

In the five years since the band formed, their hook-heavy, pop-rock sound has propelled them to successes that include a nationally televised documentary, a Juno, and a seemingly endless series of tours around the globe.

In an age of overnight Internet sensations, theirs is a true grassroots success story that has allowed the group — featuring dual frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw — to take its place among the Canadian indie rock elite.

Audiences all around the world have taken notice of the fast-rising musicians, who performed at increasingly high-profile gigs including the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and nationally televised Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

In 2011, the band toured in the U.S. and U.K. and earned international praise from Chicago’s Consequence of Sound, New York’s We All Want Someone to Shout For, and the U.K.’s BBC Radio 6.

Said The Whale’s U.S. tour was chronicled by the nationally aired, CBC documentary Winning America. The film follows the band’s journey to perform at South by Southwest, the music industry's most important festival, a festival around which the entire independent musician-year revolves.
