Give a gift of travel and treat yourself to savings before Dec. 31 with early bird passes to the 26th World Community Film Festival, to be held Feb. 3 and 4.

More than 30 of the most inspiring documentaries from Canada and abroad cover a myriad of social justice topics. Many of the uplifting and entertaining films have received rave reviews and awards at festivals such as Hot Docs, and the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Opening night feature, KONELINE: Our Land Beautiful, set deep in the traditional territory of the Tahltan First Nation, is a sensual, cinematic celebration of northwestern B.C., and all the dreamers who move across it. Awards include Best Canadian Feature and Best Cinematography at Hot Docs. Filmmaker Nettie Wild will be in attendance for a question and answer session.

Four downtown Courtenay venues run simultaneously on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with films about resilience in communities around the world, indigenous issues, food security, music and drama. Saturday afternoon is the Family Venue from 1:15 to 2:45 at the Lower Sid Theatre.

Closing night film, Nice People, tells the rousing story of a group of Somalian immigrants picking up the sport of bandy (like hockey, but with a ball instead of a puck) in their adopted home of Sweden. Nice People portrays the power of building communities through shared experiences. Check out descriptions and film trailers at www.worldcommunity.ca
