Join NIC in welcoming Landon Mackenzie, one of Canada’s most influential painters, to the Comox Valley for the launch of the fall 2018 Artist Talk Series.

Mackenzie, a faculty member at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, will kick off the series on Sept. 27.

Her work is exhibited across Canada and internationally and collected by museums including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

The artist has received Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals, as well as a 2017 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.

NIC’s five-part Artist Talk lecture series features distinguished local and international artists who share their insights and practices with local artists and community members.

Co-ordinator and NIC Fine Arts and Design department chair Sara Vipond says the series continues to offer an engaging line-up of speakers that fosters students and professional artists in the community.

“Having a widely respected artist like Landon Mackenzie lead our series really highlights the calibre of artists who are sharing their perspectives at these events,” said Vipond. “This promises to be an exciting season.”

Mackenzie will speak on Sept. 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Stan Hagen Theatre on the Comox Valley campus. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

Prior to the event, the NIC School of Fine Art & Design will be hosting a Welcome Back to School Social from 5 to 6 p.m. as an opportunity for students to mingle with the arts community and faculty. Appetizers and refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome.

Other artists slated to present for the series include Mowry Baden (Oct. 11), Scott Bertram (Oct. 25), Skeena Reece (Nov. 8) and Kelly Richardson (Nov. 22).
