Sitting in the middle of a symphony orchestra is an exhilarating experience most people never forget.

From September to May, you can become part of the action again by dusting off your string, brass, woodwind or percussion instrument and joining one of the Comox Valley’s most celebrated community ensembles: the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO).

This 65-piece community orchestra is made up of enthusiastic Comox Valley residents aged 12 to 80, who meet at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Monday night to play classical music together.

Three weekend concerts a year give you a chance to share your music making with appreciative audiences at the historic Native Sons Hall in Courtenay. Registration for 2017-18 season is at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Mark Isfield High School band room followed by the first rehearsal of the year.

Dr. James Montgomery, music director and conductor, has selected another year of exciting music for the orchestra members and audiences alike. These include such orchestral favourites as Carmen Suite (Bizet), William Tell Overture (Rossini), Finlandia (Sibelius), and HMS Pinafore (Gilbert & Sullivan).

Season tickets are being added this year for audience convenience. The Dec. 16-17 concert symphony Nöel features a special collaboration with the popular Comox Valley choral group, the Celebration Singers. This choral/symphonic extravaganza will conclude with a massed choir/orchestra and audience performance of the famous and beloved Christmas classic, The Halleluiah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

No one will want to miss this fantastic event and the best place to experience it all is sitting as a player in the orchestra. For further information on joining us, call Vreny Bryner at 250-339-3242. Let the music begin!
