Award-winning local filmmaker Daniel Kooman will be leading a week-long summer camp for youth and young adults this summer.

The workshop is set for July 4 to 8 at the Creator Space in Courtenay, 2201 Robert Lang Drive (formerly the Rod & Gun building on the Puntledge River).

The intensive, hands-on course will feature workshops in storytelling, production and editing. Participants will apply what they learn each day to make a short film during the week-long camp. A screening will wrap the Filmmaking Camp on July 8.

“I love telling meaningful stories,” says Kooman. “I took my first film course when I was seventeen, and that experience fuelled my filmmaking career. After 15 years of making documentaries and feature films and learning from great people in the industry, I want to return the favour for young, aspiring artists and storytellers.”

The Summer Filmmaking Camp is designed as a hands-on and practical experience to accelerate learning. Participants will use professional digital HD equipment, lighting and sound gear, and professional editing suites during workshops.

Post-production will include training and an overview of Final Cut X and Da Vinci Resolve.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn directly from people working in their field of expertise,” notes Kooman, whose latest feature film is the critically acclaimed She Has A Name which has toured film festivals and garnered multiple awards and award nominations in Canada and the U.S. The indie film next expands to international markets.

“As technology and the film industry continue to change, making films is more possible than ever. This film camp will help prepare a next generation of independent filmmakers.”

The Filmmaking Camp is designed for beginner to advanced filmmakers, and features a track for ages 11-14, 15-19 and 20-29. Each day features group exercises and lessons in the morning, with breakout sessions for the different age groups and experience levels in the afternoon as participants develop original short films.

Mentors are assigned to each team to maximize their learning and develop their short film ideas. Mentors will include critically acclaimed filmmaking brothers Matthew and Andrew Kooman, who with Daniel founded Unveil Studios, as well as local storyteller and photographer Paul Hansen.

Registration is $450 for the week and is currently open with spots still available. You can register at thecreatorspace.com/filmmaking.
