The Baynes Sound Connector serving the Buckley Bay-Denman Island route will be temporarily removed from service for four days for a main engine exchange and other routine tasks, according to BC Ferries.

The cable ferry, which replaced the MV Quinitsa, will be taken out of service Sept. 25 through to the end of day Sept. 28.

In early 2016, the route was overhauled with a $15-million, 78.5 metre cable ferry, with the capability of carrying 50 vehicles and 150 passengers.

The Quinitsa, which has been stationed adjacent to the Denman Island ferry terminal since the switch to the BSC, will be the replacement vessel and will begin the regular sailing schedule starting with the 6:40 a.m. sailing on Sept. 25.

Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs for the corporation said the maintenance is in accordance with the schedule of the engine manufacturer.

“We do routine refits on all of our vessels. This is not a warranty issue; it’s routine maintenance.”

Vancouver-based Seaspan built the BSC, and the main engines are two Detroit Deisel S60.

There will be no change to the schedule or the carrying capacity.

The refit will be done at Buckley Bay and resume service with the 6:40 a.m. sailing from Denman Island on Sept. 29.
