Death-defying quartet rescued by 442 Squadron helicopter

A 442 Squadron crew in a Cormorant helicopter based at CFB Comox extracted four people Friday from a spot near Toba Inlet on the B.C. coast not far from Campbell River.

The quartet barely survived when they leaped from a pickup truck just before the vehicle plunged over a cliff.

When the driver lost control on a snow-covered logging road, the pickup began sliding down an embankment. Its four occupants jumped to safety, although two of them were injured.

Poor weather prevented an air ambulance from reaching them, so a Cormorant was dispatched.

It flew the foursome to St. Joseph's General Hospital in Comox. Their condition is not known.
