Learn more about Guatemala on Jan. 14
The executive director of the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Foundation (FAFG), will be at North Island College's Comox Valley campus on Jan. 14.
Fredy Peccerelli's presentation will cover relevant human rights issues, information on the FAFG’s work in investigations of human rights violations and cases of femicide, and how the FAFG's work has become multidisciplinary.
The FAFG is the key organization involved in a process of truth, justice and reconciliation that is taking place in the country. The main concern for FAFG is the families and relatives of victims, and to be able to identify their lost loved ones and return the remains for a proper and dignified burial, as an important part of closing the grieving cycle.
The small Central American country experienced a civil war that lasted over 30 years. During the early '80s, the violence against the Mayan indigenous population (the majority population in Guatemala, even today) intensified.
Peccerelli's presentation takes place at the Stan Hagen Theatre at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14. Entrance is by donation.
