Comox Valley rural residents will vote about roadside garbage pickup
Pending the outcome of a Nov. 16 referendum, rural residents could receive a roadside garbage collection service by next September.
On Tuesday, the Comox Valley Regional District board voted to enter into a contract with BFI Canada.
The weekly service would reach about 7,500 homes in Area A — except Denman and Hornby islands and Royston — Area B and Area C, not including the Mount Washington resort community. Cost is estimated at $150 per year per household.
The service would include garbage and recyclables but not compost or yard waste. Residents in trailer parks, apartments and condominiums will not receive the service. District staff said, according to research from other jurisdictions, trailer courts can be challenging to access. In addition, they already receive communal garbage pickup of bins.
Board chair Edwin Grieve said the potential service will help the district as it works toward a goal of diverting 75 per cent of landfill material from they landfill.
