Victoria denies Comox Valley request for extra water licence
The Province has denied the regional district's request for an additional water licence for the Comox Valley water system.
The CVRD holds a licence on the Puntledge River with maximum yearly and daily diversion amounts. Its water withdrawal was exceeded in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
The Province could not approve the request due to insufficient water available on the Puntledge at the proposed point of diversion.
The district applied for the licence to meet a growing population that demands more water.
Government has outlined other means to secure additional water. For instance, BC Hydro might be able to supply water previously allocated for power generation.
