Nautical Days a weekend of family fun

The annual Nautical Days festival in Comox celebrated its 55th year of fun over three days on the BC Day weekend.

As always, the family festival featured the pet parade, bullhead derby — which hit its 28th year —  and the ever-popular Build, Bail & Sail where two-person teams race hand-crafted, sea-faring vessels around the Comox Marina entrance.

The vintage car show also reached its 28th year, while the 4 Mile Road Race — the longest continuously held road race in B.C. — ran for a 45th consecutive year.

Johnny Cash tribute act David James & Big River hit the Marina Park main stage Monday night, followed by the fireworks display to close out the festival.

“We received many positives comments regarding the new look and friendly, family feel of the festival,” event organizer Susan Wood said. “We’ve already received requests for applications for next year from crafters, food vendors and exhibitors.”

Attendance was about the same as last year.

“That was a great weekend,” added Comox by the Sea BIA co-ordinator Holly Grant, who organized the Sunday street market, which was in its second year of operation during Nautical Days. “I was just thrilled with the turnout.”

Another second-year event was a fish toss contest, held Saturday at the park.
