The 64-year-old man who was stabbed Feb. 9 on the 900 block of Cumberland Road in Courtenay has died of his injuries, and the suspect in the case has now been charged with murder.

Douglas Waterfield of Courtenay, who was arrested the day of the incident was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The victim was airlifted to hospital in Vancouver the day of the incident, where he underwent emergency surgery for his injuries. He was placed on life support following the operation but did not recover.

The victim died Feb. 19.

Waterfield's charges have been upgraded to murder. The previous charges were stayed on March 24. He will make an appearance on the murder charge April 14 in Courtenay.
