COFFEE WITH... ‘Super’ Sue Finneron
Sue Finneron was pretty much born into the car business. At age 12, not long after becoming a Valley resident, the Nanaimo-born girl was washing cars and performing janitorial duties. Now, she’s the general manager at Finneron Hyundai in Courtenay.
“That’s all I’ve ever done is the car business,” she said. “This is my 25th year of full-time, this spring.”
Finneron is also known as ‘Super Sue,’ a name that stemmed from a super-hero based advertisement.
“We used to work with a marketing company. They did up caricatures for us. It just stuck. I think the alliteration just works. So I’ve been Super Sue ever since…And at home they just call me ‘Super’.”
Finneron Hyundai has been open since 2009, but Sue’s father, Mike — the dealer principal — started the General Motors store in 1979, at the same spot on the Old Island Highway.
Finneron Hyundai earned a nomination in the business leadership category at the most recent Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Awards. Previously, it has received several business-of-the-year nominations, and won the category in the 90s.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for what we do by our peers,” Finneron said. “The business has been nominated many times. Sometimes I feel like Susan Lucci. You’ve been nominated so many times and never won.”
Finneron considers herself fortunate because has the “best team ever” and loves coming to work.
“I’m so lucky,” she said. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of them.”
Super Sue is a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise-Courtenay.
And twice a week, she teaches a spin class at Fitness Excellence.
“It was just something that I liked to do, so I learned how to do it. I went and got certified to teach. Obviously when you teach it makes you get there. Otherwise, I’d just stay at work.”
She grew up skiing at Mount Washington in winter, and paddle boarding in summer. Her latest challenge is learning how to golf.
She also likes knitting.
“There’s some weird facts. What an exciting nerd,” Finneron said with a laugh.
