The 5th Street Bridge rehabilitation project began Thursday in Courtenay. The $6.5 million is expected to take six months to complete.

Scaffolding, needed to prevent lead paint and contaminants from entering the Courtenay River, will narrow the vehicle travelling lanes, reducing available lane width and height. This will result in delays and detours for motorists, cyclists, walkers and transit users.

The bridge will soon be reduced to single lane traffic in alternating directions.
