Beginning the week of April 17, the Comox Valley Regional District will begin work to replace the aging sewer forcemain serving HMCS Quadra.

Construction will occur along Goose Spit and Hawkins roads (through Goose Spit Regional Park), beginning at HMCS Quadra, and is estimated to last six weeks through May 31.

The impacts of the work will be reduced by the use of horizontal directional drilling – a method that eliminates the need for full road excavation.

This will ensure the sensitive park habitat is protected and that work can be completed as quickly as possible.

However, area residents and park users should expect alternating one-way traffic flows. A one-week full road closure will be required, and dates will be shared once confirmed.

“While this work may be disruptive at times, it is necessary to replace the old, deteriorating forcemain that currently poses an environmental risk to the Courtenay estuary,” said Kris La Rose, P. Eng, senior manager of Water and Wastewater Services. “We’re working closely with the contractor to minimize impact on those using the park as much as possible.”

Earlier this year, the CVRD received clear feedback from area residents regarding the originally-proposed route, and was able to change the project plan to address those concerns. Rather than routing via Docliddle Road, the new HMCS Quadra forcemain will now follow Hawkins Road right to the Croteau Road intersection, where it will connect to the Town of Comox forcemain.

The replacement project, estimated to cost $1.6 million, is funded by the Department of National Defence’s capital assistance program.
