Courtenay council will discuss the Bill C-45 Cannabis Act, in relation to consideration of business licensing and zoning regulations, at tonight’s meeting at 4 p.m. in council chambers.

The bill is looking to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Criminal Code and other Acts.

It appears the federal government will legalize marijuana next summer.

In Courtenay, the newly opened Leaf Compassion Dispensary was raided by police Oct. 2. The Fourth Street establishment does not have a licence to sell product.

Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula has said the City won’t issue licences until it is determined that a marijuana business is legal.

Since the raid, City Hall has been dealing with numerous calls and emails from supporters of Leaf Compassion Dispensary — which urged people to do so via its Facebook page.
