Election 2017: Tech sector, climate action priorities for Mid Island-Pacific Rim incumbent Fraser

I’m Scott Fraser and I’m running as your BC NDP candidate in Mid Island-Pacific Rim. I’ve been an MLA for the past 12 years and I’ve seen the real harm that Christy Clark and the BC Liberals have caused. The BC NDP platform will make life more affordable for people. We’ll get rid of Medical Services Plan fees, build 114,000 rental and co-op homes, and provide an annual renters’ rebate of $400. We’ll eliminate interest on student loans and provide students a $1,000 completion grant.

We will freeze BC Hydro rates and stop Christy Clark’s 42% increase in ICBC rates, roll back ferry fares on small routes by 15%, freeze fares on major routes, and return the 100% seniors’ weekday discount.

• Christy Clark’s government has wasted millions in courts fighting teachers and hurting our kids’ education. They caused long wait times for urgent healthcare and have left seniors in care going a week at a time without a bath. The BC NDP will improve the services that you count on. We will properly fund classrooms and school equipment, and expand BC’s apprenticeship and trades training programs. We’ll increase access to doctors, nurses and health practitioners, and relieve the pressure on emergency rooms and reduce wait times. We’ll provide faster access to mental health services, when and where people need it. We’ll increase the time home care workers can spend with seniors, so seniors can stay in their own homes longer.

• For Christy Clark, the economy is about helping her rich friends and donors. And the reality for most British Columbians is that the economy isn’t working for them. We’ll work to create good jobs and build a sustainable economy in every sector of our economy and in every corner of BC. We will create 96,000 construction jobs by building schools, hospitals, roads and rapid transit over the next five years. We’ll increase minimum wage to $15, and cut the small business tax rate. We’ll revitalize BC’s forest industry and make BC a world leader in engineered wood products. We’ll spark innovation and growth in BC’s tech sector by improving investment tax credits, hiring local software developers, and re-establishing the Innovative Clean Energy program.

• We will make BC a leader on climate action by reducing our carbon footprint with energy efficiency retrofits to public buildings and homes. We’ll launch a major jobs initiative in clean energy and energy efficiency to reduce your heating bills.

Our plan shifts the balance back to where it should be. It asks the wealthiest British Columbians and profitable corporations to pay a little bit more so families like yours can get further ahead. We’ll redirect BC Liberal waste and partisan government spending to programs that matter, like improving healthcare. And we’ll eliminate Christy Clark’s LNG Fantasy Fund that you paid for with fee hikes.

As we build schools, roads, hospitals, housing and transit, we’ll grow our economy and generate new revenue. You can find our fully-costed plan at scottfraser.bcndp.ca.
