As announced at Thursday’s Glacier View Lodge annual general meeting, the planned amalgamation between GVL, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Providence Health Care is no longer being considered.

The announcement came two days after the GVL board received an official notice of permanent suspension from Providence.

“Glacier View Lodge was recently notified by Providence Health Care that a potential amalgamation between the two organizations was no longer being considered,” GVL executive director Michael Aikins said, in Friday’s press release. “Now that amalgamation with Providence is no longer an option, Glacier View Lodge’s new board will continue the planning work the previous board had undertaken to explore other opportunities for the future of the organization.”

There were a few changes within the board announced at the AGM.

Leaving the Glacier View Lodge Society board are Bob Scales (outgoing board chair), Carol Anderson (outgoing vice-chair), Margaret Szafron, Cathy Specht and Allan Douglas.

New board members Ross Griffiths-Cochrane and Margaret Silman will join returning members James Taylor (new board chair), Sandy Dreger (new vice-chair), Gib French and Roslyn Smith.

“Glacier View Lodge will continue to work with Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) to ensure that its planning is aligned with Island Health’s long-term vision and plans for seniors’ care in the region. In the meantime, Glacier View Lodge remains committed to providing safe, high-quality residential care and to keep working closely with its long-term partner, St. Joseph’s General Hospital, to continue to provide the best seniors’ care in the region.”

As for the future of Glacier View, the Glacier View Lodge Preservation Committee has a couple of proposals to be considered.

The committee’s business plan (see attached) offers two possibilities, including a partnership with Island Health, similar to the current partnership between Island Health and the Capital Region Hospital District (CRHD) in Victoria.

The GVLPS is hosting a public meeting Sept. 27 to discuss its business plan with the community. The meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Filberg Centre at 411 Anderton Ave., Courtenay.

To facilitate the public meeting, the committee is accepting question submissions, by Sept. 25, emailed to regcrone@shaw.ca. In addition, questions from the floor will be welcomed as long as time permits.
