SD71 has installed temporary fencing around this hydro box at Aspen Elementary School.

Tammy Chambers felt her concerns about school children climbing on a transformer box were falling on deaf ears.

But her worries were alleviated Thursday when she noticed fencing had been installed around the box at Aspen Park Elementary in Comox, where her daughter attends.

“I drove up to pick my daughter up, and I just about burst into tears,” Chambers said. “There was a fence. I’m happy it went up. That really solves the issue.”

The Comox Valley School District had temporary fencing installed around the transformer box, and will work with BC Hydro to develop a plan to instal permanent fencing around all transformer boxes across the school district.

“The safety of all students is our highest priority always,” said Paul Berry, SD71 director of instruction-health and safety. “We work with community partners, including BC Hydro, in the design of our facilities to ensure that the highest safety standards are met.”

Pad-mounted BC Hydro transformer boxes exist throughout the Valley, in many areas featuring the work of local artists.

Berry notes that each box contains explicit, clear warnings regarding the potential electrical hazard contained within, but they are not fenced.

“Clear direction to all students has always been that these boxes are not play spaces,” he said.
