Born in Cardiff, Wales on April 19, 1922 – Nov. 6, 2009.
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Audrey Joan Sawchuck who lost her brave battle with cancer and died peacefully with her family by her side at Berwick, Comox on Nov. 6, 2009. She will be missed dearly by her husband Ed; children, Afona Peters (Dave); Greg Sawchuck (Marlene); Cathy Lambert (Greg); grandchildren, Meg , Noel (Kerry), Richard, Allan (Vicky), Natalie, Melissa, Angela and great-grandchildren, Emily, Madison, Summer, Carter and Jackson.
Audrey was a seamstress by trade and during the war she was sewing parachutes when she met Ed at a dance in Cardiff as he was stationed with the Canadian army in Barry, near Cardiff. They were married on April 14, 1945 and she sailed on the Aquitania in March of 1946, landed in Halifax, crossed Canada by train and met Ed in Vancouver and settled in “downtown” Buckley Bay. Ed and Audrey lived in Buckley Bay for 59 years and Audrey was an active member of the Communities of Buckley Bay, Fanny Bay, and Union Bay with many organizations – Union Bay Church, Denman & District Lace Club, and War Brides. Audrey was a well-known soloist and many know her from the multitude of weddings or concerts where she performed.
Ed and Audrey have resided at Berwick in Comox for the past 3 years. The family is very grateful to the Berwick staff for the immense support and care they have given to us all in the last few months. Thank you to Allison Knowles and the Home Support Staff for their kindness. Also thank you to the Ambulance crew and Hospital staff and especially Dr. Howard and Dr. Ingman. We’re grateful for spiritual support from Rev. Ray Brandon and Dr. David Bowler.
A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at the Union Bay Community Hall on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom’s memory to the B.C. Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
