Marrs, Donald George

Feb 24, 1909 - Dec 16, 2004

Don passed away at Cumberland Lodge at age 95 years and will be lovingly remembered by Mabel, his wife of 68 years; his son Robert (Anne); daughter Doreen McClelland (Michael); sister Ella Holden; 3 grandchildren: Debbi Tomlinson (Les) of Lake Cowichan, Myles Dougan (Joanne) of Calgary, Wesley Marrs (Shana) of Duncan; and 5 great-grandchildren: Braden, Danika, Charlene, Amber, and Leo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers: Eric and Colin.

Don was born in Surrey, England and emigrated to Canada with his parents Lionel and Hilda Marrs, settling in at the place everyone knew as “The Ranch” off Drinkwater Road. Shortly after his marriage to Mabel he served for six years in the Canadian Army in Europe from 1939-1945. Upon returning home to Duncan he worked in the logging industry for Taylor Brothers and Hillcrest Lumber Co. In February 1955 he left the logging industry to work for the Dept. of Highways until his retirement in 1974.

While living at Cobble Hill Don served as the St. John’s Church people’s warden as well as the rector’s warden. He was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Cobble Hill Branch. In 1981 when the little farm in Cobble Hill became too much for Don and Mabel to look after they moved to Duncan. Approximately 3 years ago they moved to Casa Loma Retirement Center in Courtenay and for the last eighteen months Don has been lovingly cared for in Cumberland Lodge.

The family would like to thank Dr. Woldnick and all the truly wonderful and caring staff at Cumberland Lodge for their dedication and care of Don during his stay there. The family is especially grateful to all the staff in the special care unit for the love and support that both Don and his family received. Thank you!

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter’s Church, Duncan on January 29/05 to celebrate Don’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s memory to the Special Care Unit, Cumberland Lodge, Box 400, Cumberland, BC, V0R 1S0.
