HUGHES, Donald
Don Hughes passed away from pneumonia on July 26th in Comox with his family by his side. Don was born in Stafford, England in 1927. He is survived by his wife Sheila, son Allan his wife Karen, brother Les and wife Muriel of Gosport, England and many nephews and nieces in Canada and abroad. Predeceased by his parents George and Sarah, brothers: William, George and Alfred, sisters: Alice and Hilda.
Don immigrated to Canada in 1957 living in Toronto and Calgary before settling in Vancouver in 1962. Don and Sheila were active in square dancing for over 25 years; Don played tennis in his 20’s and golfed in his later years. Don retired in 1991 from Lucas Fluid Power in Toronto; he also worked for Martin and Robertson, Canadian Fishing Co., Queen Charlotte Fisheries and CAE Morse as an accountant/controller. Don enjoyed the company of his family and the many wonderful friends he made during his life.
His spirit and wit endured the last few years even after many surgeries and taking care of Sheila at home until 2003. Sincere thanks to Dr. Matous, his dear neighbours Rob and Jill and the staff at St Joseph’s Hospital during his last hours. A Celebration of Life will be held for Don in October in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Don’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society.
