For Grandma Courtenay
How do we hold ourselves together
When your loss would break us apart?
When we cannot see past the moment
Beyond our broken hearts
If we could dream the world anew
You know we would dream you here,
If we had not been captured unprepared
We’d have said what you needed to hear
Change opens the door and leaves us no choice
In this sweeping waltz from dawn ‘til dusk,
A future without you that must be faced
So blindly, with grace and trust
We imagine you scratch the chin of the moon
Or wander the planets and stars,
The human spirit released from its shell
Adventuring too soon, so far
It is impossible for us to measure,
The immeasurable human being
The mysterious magic that made you alive,
Your music, your rhythms, your tune
Each will hold dear a special person,
One long moment of life and love
Each will remember the care that you gave,
Let it fly in our hearts like a dove
We have what you gave us to cherish,
We honour and celebrate in song
As you walked with us, talked with us
Shared what you knew
And then quietly moved along
