CHERNIAWSKI, Eleanor

(1922 – 2010)

Eleanor passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on February 12. Eleanor was preceded by her daughter, Beth (1992), husband, Peter (1994), brother, Morgan (2007) and twin sister, Helen (2008). She is survived by her older brother, Erwin and son, Bear (Kathy).

Eleanor was born in Mossbank, Saskatchewan on March 28th, 1922 and grew up in Regina. In 1936 the family moved to Alberta to farm. Eleanor loved working with horses and machinery. Not surprisingly when WWII broke out, Eleanor moved to Edmonton and worked at the Canadian Forces Base as a civilian driver. While in Edmonton, Eleanor met the tall, handsome Peter Cherniawski, who she married in 1954 and had a daughter and son.

Eleanor and Pete loved to dance and go camping; summer holidays often including trailer trips and square dance jamborees. For fifteen years, Eleanor drove bus for the Winifred Stewart School and loved her work with the school’s special needs children. When Peter retired from AGT, Eleanor and Pete moved to Ladysmith to build their dream home. After a move back to St. Albert (near Edmonton) and following Beth and Peter’s deaths, Eleanor returned to the coast, settling close to her sister in Comox. For the past two years, Eleanor has lived at Cummings Home in Courtenay where she has found a caring community.

Eleanor loved a good chat over a coffee. She was a loyal friend and beloved family member. We miss her already but know that we will be together again.

On Friday, February 19th at 11:00 a.m., family and friends are invited to remember Eleanor at a service at the Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay. Refreshments will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, 2137 Comox Avenue, Comox, B.C., V9M 1P2 (www.sjghcomox.ca).
