Beatty, Ethel Dorothy

(nee: Brown)

Born May 24th, 1915

Fernie, B.C.

It is with heavy hearts we record the passing of our dear Mother. She was predeceased by her firstborn infant son , David, her husband of 61 years, J.C. “Russ” Beatty, her parents Edwin and Florence Brown, elder sister May and dear brother-in-law, Tony Botter. She is survived by her sons: Doug Beatty (Comox), and Ken Beatty (Ethne) St. John’s, Newfoundland, her daughter Donna (Ross) Grant, grandsons: Ian Grant, Andrew (Barb) Grant, and great-grandchildren: William and Fiona Grant (Crofton), brothers: Herb (Neva) Brown of California and Len (Evelyn) Brown of Vancouver, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Vancouver she was a Sunday School teacher with the Salvation Army and a Girl Guide Leader.

After a lengthy career in retail, managing the stationery department for two firms, she settled into married life and raising a family. Her husband and children came first in importance in her life followed by extended family and friends. Growing up we joked about living in “Beatty’s” Hotel. Friends and family came to stay on all occasions. Holidays were always a reason for family gatherings and the sharing of Mom’s great homestyle cooking followed by a sing-song around the old upright piano or a lively game of “Pit”, an old-fashioned card game, at the diningroom table.

Mom was always there with a helping hand when needed. She devoted many hours to church auxiliary work. Music was a big part of her life and she enjoyed playing the piano and singing in various church choirs over the years. She enjoyed landscape painting as a hobby. She inherited her father’s love of gardening and all things bloomed under her touch. She was the family’s historian filling many photo albums with all the important family events of a lifetime for the rest of us to enjoy. She loved to get mail and kept all the family connected to each other through her correspondence. She will be sorely missed.

A Service of Remembrance in celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, November 30th, 2006 at 1:00pm from COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM, 1101 RYAN ROAD, followed by entombment at Courtenay Civic Cemetery and fellowship and refreshments in “The Garden Room” of the funeral home. Flowers gratefully accepted.
