SMITH, Hazel B. (Nee Hudson)

July 22, 1918 – December 6, 2010

Born in Anglemont to her homesteading parents – William A. Hudson and Dora B. Munger. Mom was one of eight children, seven girls and one, doted on baby brother.

Mom was very proud of her family and all their accomplishments. Even though all her younger years were lived during the depression, she had only good things to say – never a complaint.

Mom retired to Anglemont in 1980. She wanted to remain there until they “carried her out in a pine box”. Unfortunately, dementia would not allow this.

Mom was predeceased by her first husband, John Murray Jamieson in 1942. He died in WW11 and is buried in Norway. A baby daughter, Mary was born and died on October 3, 1949 and is buried in Duncan. Mom met and married dad, Robert Louis Smith, on August 28, 1943. They spent 65 years together, Bob predeceased her in 2008. Mom is predeceased by her parents and all her sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy, Bessie, Mary, Mildred, Lorna and her brother George. Mom is the last of her family to pass on. If only she had retained her memory, she could have had that final word!

Hazel was proud of attending Sprott Shaw Community College, and during the Second World War, she worked for the Times – Colonist in Victoria in accounting and in later years for the Postal Service at the Comox Air Force Base. Mom enjoyed writing for the Shuswap Chronicles, telling stories of early days in Anglemont. She was an avid bird watcher and passed this interest on to her children and grandchildren. Most of all she and dad just liked being together. All who met them commented on what a sweet couple they were.

A gentle spirit and a strong will has left us, but we are all better for having known her, loved her and been taught by her.

Survived by sons Greg (Penny) of Kelowna, Michael of Victoria, daughter Robyn (Jim) of Chase; grandsons Trevor (Nagore), Jamie (Nina), Christopher; granddaughters Megan (Jim), Erin (Jeremy), and great grandsons Maxwell and Samuel.

Funeral Service was held at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Chase on Saturday, December 11, 2010 with Father Giovanni Manalac celebrant. Interment will followed at Chase Memorial Cemetery.
