James (Jim) Patrick Kirk

Jim passed away suddenly but peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital, surrounded by his family, on November 24, 2014.

Jim was 96 years old and lived a remarkable life. He was born in 1918 in Gypsumville, Manitoba. Schooling and College in Winnipeg. Active in Boy Scouts, achieving a King Scout award. Joined the Hudson’s Bay Co. Fur Trade Dept. in 1938.  Spent 4 years in the Yukon before joining the RCAF as a staff pilot instructor, and Deputy Flight Commander in charge of night flying operations in Paulson, Manitoba.

Jim and Doras Smith met and were married in Gibsons Landing in 1943. Following the war, Jim returned to the Fur Trade with Doras. In 1950 they left the North to take over the Denman General Store & Post Office, where they raised their three sons, Robert, Ted and John. They operated the store for 16 years.  After selling the store, Jim worked on the Denman Island ferry then retired in 1983 which gave Jim and Doras time to travel the continent together.

Doras became an Alzheimers patient, and past away in 1997.

A special thank you to our terrific doctors, David, Doreen, Stephan, Ron and Willow who gave Dad great care over the years and heard a lot of his stories, some more than once.  Thanks too, to Joy Lance and her amazing EHS team for their care and support over the years.  A memorial is planned for Jim on Saturday, January 24th, 1:30pm at the Denman Island Seniors Hall. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to St’ Saviours Church Denman Island BC V0R 1T0
