John Spence (Ian)

October 12, 1924 - July 27, 2009


Ian was born in Boston, Mass., USA of Scottish parents. Ian grew up with his brothers, George, Willie, and Gordon, all now deceaased. He attended elementary school in Sharon, Mass. In 1932, the family moved back to Edinburgh, Scotland where Ian finished his education at Daniel Stewart's College. While enrolled at Heriot-Watt College, he served with the university officer's training corp. After joining the Royal Navy as an Officer Cadet at the age of 18, Ian served in the Combined Operations Command, mostly in SE Asia from 1942 to 1946. In 1951, Ian, Doreen and their first born daughter Alison immigrated to Canada settling in Vancouver and then to Victoria. Ian had a career as a credit manager with Ocean Cement, Butler Bros, and Island Paving. Ian and Doreen built their waterfront dream home in Merville where they retired to in 1988. In 2006, Ian was predeceased by his dear wife Doreen (Sandeman) who he married in 1947. He is survived by his children Alison (Bob) grandson Ewan, Gordon (June) granddaughter April, Irene (John) granddaughter Katelyn and grandson Cameron, and Anne (Deha) grandson Emre.
