Sturdy, John

January 1938

~ September 2009

Born in Consett, in the County of Durham, England on 6 January 1938, passed away suddenly on 29 September 2009 in Courtenay.

John emigrated to Canada with his parents, Francis and Margaret Sturdy, arriving on 31 July 1950. The family settled in Calgary where John completed his education. In March 1956 John joined the RCAF and served 27 years in Canada and Europe before retiring in August 1983. John was a 35 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Over the years he served as chairman of many committees and in January 1999 was awarded his Life Membership. John enjoyed his beer and his friends at the Legion. So for those of you so inclined, have a beer for him. Maybe under the circumstances, you should make it two. He was an avid sports fan and a lifelong supporter of the Calgary Stampeders. In the early years after its inception, John served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the local Crime Stoppers organization.

Predeceased by his parents, John is survived by two sons in Alberta, James and Brian. He is also survived by his daughter Tracy Lowrey (Shawn) of Courtenay.

A Celebration of Life and Poppy Tribute will be held at the Courtenay Legion on Friday 23 October 2009 at 2:00 pm.

Donations in John’s memory may be made to one of his favorite charities, the Children’s Ward at St. Joseph’s Hospital, by contributing to the jar located on the Courtenay Legion Bar.
