A resident of Cumberland Lodge, Cumberland, B.C. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 aged 92. Predeceased by her grand-daughter Tara Hope Jancowski, husband Richard William Jancowski and son Richard William Jancowski Jr. She is survived and will be lovingly missed by sons John (Nan) of Cumberland and David (Cathy) of Fort McMurray, Alberta; grandchildren Debbie, Sherrill, Sean, Michael, Richard, Jackie and Lori. Kay was born in Victoria, B.C. on January 9th, 1918 and graduated from the Western School of Pharmacy in 1940. In addition to her work, she was incredibly committed to her community. Kay was Founding Member and Charter President of the Soroptomist Club of Courtenay, member of Florence Chapter #53, OES, Chairperson of the Western Division of the CPHA committee of Community Pharmacy Practice and the first woman President of the B.C. P.H.A. In 1977 she was elected Trustee of School District #71 and in 1980 became Chairperson of the School Board. In 1981, Kay assumed the Presidency of the local Canadian Cancer Unit and in 1984 she was elected President of the Comox Valley Canadian Cancer Society. In the same year Kay was appointed to the Board as Government Representative of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox, B.C. In 1990, she served as Vice-Chair of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. In later years, she received her Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science Degree from U.B.C. These are but a few of the countless contributions Kay made to each community in which she lived. She was a force to be reckoned with. Her family invites friends to join them for a tea at the Cumberland Cultural Centre, 2674 Dunsmuir Ave, Cumberland, on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. to help celebrate a life well lived.
