Marrs, Mabel Alma

September 7, 1907 - October 15, 2006

After a full, long life, Mabel passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox on October 15, 2006 at age 99. Predeceased by her husband Donald Marrs in December 2004. Lovingly remembered by her daughter, Doreen McClelland (Michael) Courtenay; son, Robert Marrs (Anne) Princeton; sisters-in-law Ella (Pip) Holden and Mary Marrs both of Duncan; grandchildren: Debra Tomlinson, Lake Cowichan, Myles Dougan (Joanne), Calgary, Wesley Marrs (Shana), Duncan, as well as Donna McIsaac, Gertrude & Duncan McLellan; and great-grandchildren: Braden, Danica, Charleen, Amber, Leo, Emily, Madison, Ashley, Zackery & Sebastian; numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and England.

Mabel was born at Shawnigan Lake, BC but when she was just a wee baby her family moved back to England so she always had fond memories of England as her home.

When the family came back to Canada, Mabel started her career as a telephone operator in Cobble Hill where she continued working until the dial telephone was introduce to the area.

She married Donald Marrs in 1937 and lived most of their married life at the family home in Cobble Hill, moving to Duncan when the little farm became too much for them to handle.

Both Don and Mable were active members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Cobble Hill Branch. In 1999 Mabel received the Meritorious Award and Certificate of Appreciation. She was also an active member of St. John’s Church, Cobble Hill and St. Peter’s Church, Duncan.

Five years ago they moved to Casa Loma assisted living in Courtenay. She loved social gatherings, playing Scrabble and Cribbage. Thank you to Anne, Lila, Jenny and all the other staff at Casa Loma for making mom feel so at home. She really enjoyed living there. Thanks to Gordon Carter Hospital Chaplin and to all the 3rd Floor Staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital. A Memorial Service to be held in Duncan at a later date.
