BANNERMAN Ronald Earl

September 11, 1945 ~November 9, 2009

On Monday, November 9, well-known teacher and historian Ronald Earl Bannerman suddenly passed away.  Born in Cumberland to John and Alice (Brown) Bannerman, he attended both elementary and secondary schools here, but completed grade 12 in Courtenay.  Ron enrolled at UVIC in 1964, and graduated as a teacher in May 1968.  Returning to the Comox Valley, he had the pleasure of teaching intermediate students at various schools, and worked and socialized with many instructors as well as personal friends.   Ron left his principalship at Royston Elementary School in 1994 to resume his first love - guiding young students in the classroom.  A health problem in 1999 resulted in Ron having to leave his career after 41 years.   Ron developed two colouring books, gave lectures and organized tours for the next 10 years.

Ron was predeceased by his mother, Alice, in 2000, his aunt Anne Brown in 1994, his uncle Andrew Brown in 1979, and his uncle Leland Bannerman in 1967.  He is survived by his wife Cindy (McManus), his son Michael, his daughter Kim (Shawn), his grand-daughter Zoe, and his father John.  Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins make up a warm, loving family.  Ron also leaves behind his three brothers-in-law: Michael McManus (Cheryl), Tim McManus (Dale), and Chris McManus (Sandi) and their families - Matthew, Trenton, Michelle, Jacqueline and Colin, and one sister-in-law, Vicki Lindgren and her family.   Ron also leaves his stepmother-in-law, Doreen McManus, and her children: Margaret Grey (Steve) and Rob Howett (Josephine) and their families - David, Sara, Kathleen, Christine, and Jennifer.  He also leaves his aunt Margaret Bannerman and her family: Bruce Bannerman (Marilyn) and David Bannerman (Rosemarie), and their families - Jesse, Brooke, Tyler and Gina.

A memorial service will be held on November 21, 2009 at the Cumberland Recreational Institute on Dunsmuir Ave. at 1:30pm.  Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation are appreciated.
