Rose Helen
March 13, 1919 - August 24, 2007
Rose Helen, daughter of Phillip and Julia Horovenko, passed away August 24, 2007 at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay, BC, at the age of 88.
Rose is survived by her daughters: Sharon Kuny (Dave) of Creston, BC, Lanie Salm (Marvin) and Julie Hulsebosch (Frank) of Tisdale, Sask., and son Gregg Townsend (Dianne) of Cumberland, BC; her brother Bill Horovenko of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren: Rob, Dean, Shawn, Kent, James, Lindsay, Lucas, Jessie, Lyssa, Seth, and Peter; great-grandchildren: Logan, Taylor, Kyle, Jared, Janelle, Haley, Dianna, and Amon; many nieces and nephews; and husband Mike Gark of Courtenay, BC.
She is predeceased by her parents; sisters: Mary, Carrie, Vera, and Jean; brothers:Steve, George, Joe, and Fred; son Bobby, husband Ted Townsend; and granddaughter Caren Kuny.
Rose was born in Saskatoon and grew up on the family homestead near Biggar, Sask. In her youth, she trained and worked as a hairdresser. She married Ted Townsend in 1942 and settled in Tisdale, Saskatchewan to raise their family of five children. Rose worked part-time as a hairdresser at a local shop and also styled hair for residents in Sasko Park Lodge, a seniors’ home. As well, she worked in the Tisdale Eatons catalogue office and as an Avon sales representative. She was active in the Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, the United Church Auxiliary and Choir, and the Tisdale Curling Club. In 1969, Rose and Ted relocated to Port McNeill, BC. They lived and worked there until 1974, when they bought six acres of land in Black Creek, BC, and built a home. Rose enjoyed the rural life for many years, with her gardens, fruit trees, and livestock. She loved music and dancing, enjoyed painting, walking, and travelling. Always ready with a smile and an optimistic outlook, she happily took part in many social events in every community she was a part of. She remarried in 1986.
Rose lived in Glacier View Lodge for the past six years, cared for with dignity and compassion by the wonderful staff there, to whom we are ever grateful. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Glacier View Lodge, 2450 Back Road, Courtenay, BC, V9N 9G8.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 01, 2007 at Tisdale, SK.
Rose will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
