Russell passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010 at St. Joseph's General Hospital. He was predeceased by his brothers Gordon and Keneth and a sister Audrey Wiebe (Peter). Russell is survived by his loving wife Evelyn; son Gordon (Tonya) Somerset, Kentucky; daughter Kelly Bowers, Wainwright, Alberta; grandchildren Abigail and Olivia; sisters Norma Weltzin (Jack), Surrey, B.C. and Wilma Olson (Mel), Whitehorse, Yukon Territories; brother-in-law John Johnson (Rose) North Battleford, Sk.; sister-in-laws Louise Smedemark, Campbell River, B.C., and Phyllis Johnson, Harare, Zimbabwe; numerous nieces and nephews; friends Ossi & Sisko Launonen and all other friends that Russell knew. He was in the Merchant Navy for 3 years during World War ll. Russell was an active member of Cupe 600-5, North Battleford Labour Council, Saskatchewan Farmers Union and Canadian Seamans Union. Russell was a Register Physhiatric Nurse for 36 years. He enjoyed painting, flower gardening and landscaping. Russell was a loving husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. Russell was a lifelong advocate for workers rights and social justice and was fighting the good fight with his last breath.
A Celebration of Life gathering for Russell Bowers will be held in the O.A.P.O. - (Buchanan Hall) 2674 Dunsmuir Ave., Cumberland on Friday, July 23, 2010 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
