Thelma Isabel Oliver
(née Cameron)
of Courtenay, BC died suddenly on July 8.
Predeceased by her husband Edward Oliver (1986). Survived by her children John (Gayle) and George, grandchildren Hana and Naomi Oliver, brother Donald Cameron and beloved dog Joey.
Thelma married at age 19, received a Doctorate of Political Science from York University while raising her children, and taught at several Canadian Universities before devoting over a decade to caring for her family. As a widow, she worked for Members of the Legislative Assembly in BC, eventually working in the Provincial Government as assistant to various ministers for a decade in the 1990s. Thelma wrote plays and novels throughout her life. Her play "Diefenbaker" was produced by Saskatchewan's 25th Street Theatre in 1983-84, and her opera "Guacamayo's Old Song and Dance" (written with her son, composer John) was produced by the Canadian Opera Company in 1991.
