Ferries should be part of our provincial infrastructure

It’s time for the provincial government to take back the responsibility for our ferries

Dear editor,

What a tempest over the possibility of closing down the Horseshoe Bay/Departure Bay ferry run! I am pleased that Minister Stone has said that the Liberal government is committed to maintaining both the Nanaimo and mainland ferry routes.

However, what we really need to see is a commitment to making our ferries part of our provincial infrastructure. When will the Sea to Sky Highway and the Alex Fraser Bridge be expected to pay their own way? It’s time for the provincial government to take back the responsibility for our ferries and operate them for the benefit of British Columbians, just like they do the rest of the highway system.
