Parents warned about potential hazard for children in Comox Valley

Dear editor,

Attention, all parents and grandparents of the children who participate in or watch the wonderful youth soccer games at Valleyview Park on Saturday mornings:

There is a hazard nearby that you should know about.

At the northeast corner of the park, where it adjoins the skateboard park, there is an easily climbed embankment about 12 feet high. At the top of this embankment, there is a concrete runway, part of the skateboard facility.

About 20 to 25 feet in from the top of the embankment, parts of the runway drop straight down about 10 feet to the concrete floor of the bowl, or pit. There is no fence or railing.

If you are not already aware of this hazard, then please go there next time you are at the park. Stand right beside the pit and ask yourself if you would want your children or grandchildren to be standing there unattended.

If your answer is no, then please call the3 city at 250-334-4441 and ask them to extend the existing fence on the south side over to the fence on Lerwick Road and on the west side to the end of the embankment.

If a child falls into that pit and it is determined that the child got there by simply climbing up the embankment, then a fence will be erected.

So why not erect the fence now to help prevent a tragic accident? The cost involved is well worthwhile.

Dick Tatton,

Courtenay
