South sweeps North
The South swept the North at Sunday’s VIJHL All-Star and Prospects games at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
The South (players from Victoria, Peninsula, Saanich and Westshore) set the tone in the Prospects game, outshooting the North (players from Comox Valley, Oceanside, Kerry Park and Campbell River) 52-39 en route to a 9-2 win. The South led 4-2 after one period and just kept pulling away.
Brian Rideout and Mitch Ball of the Comox Valley Glacier Kings both picked up assists.
Later in the day, the South trailed the North 2-1 after two periods but erupted for four unanswered goals in the final frame to steal a 5-2 win. Shots on goal favoured the South 44-26. North captain Colton Ruthven of the Glacier Kings had the go-ahead goal in the second stanza set up by Comox Valley teammate James Bryant.
Just to make the trip home even sweeter, the South outshone the North in the skills competition, which included shootout, speed skate and rapid fire events.
