Visually impaired take to the ice

Comox Valley youth who are blind or visually-impaired are getting the opportunity to learn to skate and play hockey, thanks to Courage Canada Hockey for the Blind and their national non-profit key partner AMI - Accessible Media Inc.

Approximately 10 participants from kindergarten through high school will get the opportunity to step out on the ice and skate with help from the students at Highland High School’s Hockey Academy.

The session is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 10 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Glacier Gardens Arena in Comox.

This season, over 400 youth who are blind or visually-impaired from coast to coast are participating in learn to skate and blind hockey programs. Courage Canada Hockey for the Blind is a nationally registered charity that provides youth who are blind or visually impaired the opportunity to develop skating and hockey skills through learn to skate and play hockey programs.

The program consists of both on- and off-ice components, as each youth is paired up one on one with a skating mentor and participates in a one hour on-ice session.

Off-ice aspects include workshops on themes such as courage, leadership, advocacy and living a healthy active lifestyle, instilling confidence, self-esteem and leadership characteristics that carry forward both on the ice and within the community.
