The Comox Valley Glacier Kings are partnering with the Comox Valley’s Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society and 98.9 Jet FM in support of the Raise the Roof initiative.
Dawn to Dawn is a non-profit, residential housing program that makes transitional housing possible in the Comox Valley, providing homeless individuals and families with access to housing that gets them off the streets.
Since the inception of the Residential Program in April 2009, over 60 individuals and families have been sheltered and provided with the opportunity to create stability in their lives.
Raise the Roof is a nationwide initiative that supports grass roots organizations such as Dawn to Dawn.
Richard Clarke of Dawn to Dawn says this is a great grass roots fundraiser.
"Any toque sold in the Comox Valley, we will get the proceeds from that. They stay right here in the Comox Valley, and we're providing homes for 18 persons at the moment."
The Raise the Roof Toque Toss goes Friday, Feb. 1 when the Glacier Kings host the Oceanside Generals in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Sports Centre.
Bring a toque, or purchase a toque at the game from Dawn to Dawn, and when the Glacier Kings score their first goal of the game, the toques will be tossed on the ice. You are welcome to bring a new toque, or purchase one from the Dawn to Dawn crew who will have a table set up at the game. All funds raised stay in the Comox Valley to help those who need it.
The Icemen have arranged for the three local mayors (Leslie Baird of Cumberland), Paul Ives of Comox and Larry Jangula of Courtenay) to participate in a ceremonial puck drop.
Jet FM morning man Jay Hatton is looking forward to tonight. “It's 100 per cent giving back to the community. It’s as easy as buying a toque and throwing it on the ice. You get to have fun and watch some hockey at the same time you're helping out some people that need it. It's definitely a good thing."
