Twenty-three members from the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) competed in the annual Harriers Pioneer 8K in Saanichton on Jan. 10.

A beautiful sunny day saw the top three overall finish in under 24 minutes, led by Rob Watson in 23:47. Natasha Wodak was the top female, winning her fifth Pioneer 8K in a record time of 26:31. Derek Vinge was the fastest from the Valley in 26:47, holding a blistering 3:21 average pace; Vince Brotherston was second in M50-54 in 29:42. Other CVRR highlights include Les Disher winning M65-69 and Marion Bryan winning F40-44.

It’s important to note that race events like the Pioneer welcome all ages and abilities.  Mother and son Deb and Hudson Webster and father and son Don and Steve Blacklock all had great times in their first Island Series race.

The Island Race Series continues with the Cobble Hill 10K on Jan. 24. CVRR hosts the Comox Valley Half Marathon on March 20, as well as a 10-week long 5K Run Clinic that runs every Saturday morning from Jan. 16 to March 19.
