Isfeld Ice qualify for Provincial 3A boys basketball championships

A third-place finish at the Island 3A championships has propelled the Isfeld Ice senior boys basketball team to a third straight appearance at the B.C. championships.

Competing at the eight-team Island tourney Feb. 25-27 at Nanaimo District, the Ice (North #1) defeated Carihi (N5) 69-36 in their Thursday opener, with Isfeld's Noah Kaefer named Player of the Game.

On Friday the Ice suffered their first loss of the season, 75-45 to Wellington (N3). The Courtenay crew regrouped Saturday, beating Ballenas (N4) 80-51 in the morning with Hank Magdanz POG then defeating Mount Dougas (S1) 67-38 Saturday night with Ice's Jeppe Madsen POG.

Kaefer and Magdanz were named to the first all-star team while Madsen earned Best Defensive Player honours.

Wellington will go to Provincials as VI#1 with Nanaimo VI#2 and Isfeld VI#3.

At the Island 4A tournament in Dover Bay, the Vanier Towhees senior boys dropped two straight to finish tied for fifth at the six-team event.

On Thursday, Vanier (N3) fell 80-74 to Belmont (S2) with Chasen Hobenshield named Vanier's POG. On Saturday the Towhees lost 79-55 to Dover Bay (N2) with Hobenshield Vanier's POG.

Hobenshield was named to the second all-star team. Oak Bay will go to Provincials as VI#1 with Cowichan VI#2.

It was also two-and-out for the Highland Raiders at the Island 2a tourney at SMUs.

The Raiders (N4) lost 92-35 to Lambrick Park (S1) on Thursday with Austin Long named POG. On Friday the Raiders fell 82-62 to Parkland (S3) with Highland's Lucas Casemore POG.

The Raiders finished tied for seventh at the eight-team event. Advancing to B.C.s are Lambrick Park VI#1, Lambrick Park VI2# and Shawnigan Lake VI#3.

All the boys' B.C. tourneys go March 9-12 at the Langley Events Centre.
