Comox Valley Jets Mosquito ball team second in B.C.

The Comox Valley Jets AA Mosquito ball team placed second at provincials. The team, coached by Rob McDowell, Matt Baggaley and Blair Grinde, qualified by coming in first with straight wins at the AA Mosquito Zones hosted locally. They did not know what to expect at provincials where there were 10 teams from around B.C.

The first game the Jets had a decisive win against Cloverdale. In the second game, they dominated and it ended in the fifth inning with a mercy. The Jets then faced Campbell River in a close game. The home side was ahead 12-10 when the game was called for time. The fourth game was against Vancouver Expos and the Jets fought back from a 4-11 deficit to win 13-12. That game was an excellent example of resilience and never giving up. That win put the team first in their pool.

Playoffs began Sunday against Salt Spring, whom the team had successfully faced several times throughout the season. Salt Spring came on strong but the Jets prevailed, which landed them a spot in the final against Salmon Arm. Excellent pitching by both teams kept the score 1-1 going into the fourth inning. Then the bats came alive for Salmon Arm and the Jets could not catch them. There were no regrets by the Jets losing to a strong team, just pride in their unexpected accomplishment of second place in the province.
