The Marine Harvest Riptide is hosting an information meeting Wednesday for all male players born 1997-2001 interested in playing for the club next fall.

The Riptide is exploring the idea of adding a U21 team to compete in the Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) U21 division.

The squad would be a combination of players from the North Island ages 1997-1999 with the opportunity to include younger players in the 2000 age group.

The organization is also going to be running the U17-U18 Riptide program for the 2000-2001 born players in the Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL).

However, it needs to consider that the Canadian Soccer Association has announced there will be national championships at the U15 and U17 age groups.

“Which means that if your team wins provincials at U17, you are then selected to attend the national championships,” said Shel Brodsgaard, Riptide soccer development co-ordinator.

“Therefore, we will also be required to consider this opportunity and determine if we have enough players and interest to run a U17 team in the VIPL for next fall (2001 born players only), or if we do not have enough interest or players and will run a U17-U18 team in the VIPL for next fall (2001 and 2000 born players).”

The information meeting will be used to assess the level of interest in the programs listed above and determine the next course of action pertaining to trials.

The meeting is at Comox Valley United’s clubhouse April 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

All interested parties are asked to complete a form beforehand.
