The Brick House Betties roller derby team credits a fun and successful 2017 season to the support of its fans, local business sponsors, and the strong derby community in the area. In partnership with local junior team, the Stone Cold Stellas, the Betties hosted two doubleheader events at home. The first took place April 29 at Glacier Gardens in Comox, with visiting teams from Nanaimo. The first roller derby event to be played at CFB Comox was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd. The next event was June 10 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre in Courtenay. The Stellas hosted Salt Spring Island’s junior team, The Tempest, in their debut game and the Betties welcomed the Pow!Town Pickup Styx. Each doubleheader was a well-attended family-friendly event. Both home teams posted exciting wins at both events.
The Betties also hosted two open scrimmages for skaters from across the Island this winter, a bootcamp in February with visiting coaches from the Vancouver Murder, and the team travelled to Victoria for a game April 1. It has been the Betties’ shortest season, but has also been a development year for the team.
Interested in joining roller derby as a skater, a ref, or an NSO (non-skating official)? The Stellas accept young skaters ages 7-17. Women must by over 18 to join the Betties, and men are welcome to join the Betties in an officiating capacity.
Intake sessions start September.
