A couple of Comox Valley products provided the scoring for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s soccer team in a 7-2 loss Sunday to MacEwan University in Edmonton.

Camryn Curts and Olivia Bates — who played together last season with the Upper Island Riptide in the Comox Valley — both found the back of the net off of set plays.

MacEwan outshot TRU, 29-3. Dannielle Robertson, a rookie goalkeeper from Courtenay, played between the pipes.

“Danielle Robertson was solid in goal,” TRU coach Kelly Shantz said. “There wasn’t much she could do on a lot of them (goals). She made some very good saves.”

The travel weary WolfPack needed 16 hours to reach their destination in Alberta after their bus broke down near McBride in northern B.C.

The squad has lost its first two Canada West regular season matches. On Friday, TRU lost 3-0 to the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.

“Injuries are starting to get to us as we lost two starters following the game with UNBC,” Shantz said. “That is a setback. It was a really long trip. We had to wait four hours on the side of the road after our bus broke down.”

The WolfPack is in Saskatchewan this weekend. They take on the Huskies in Saskatoon on Saturday, and the Cougars at the University of Regina on Sunday. Their regular season home opener is Sept. 23 against the UBC Thunderbirds.
