One of Canada’s most prominent and well-informed investors is returning for his second visit to Courtenay to share his opinions on what 2011 might bring in terms of investment opportunities.

James Gauthier, a Toronto-based analyst who oversees investment fund research for Dundee Wealth Management, will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Year Ahead Investment Presentation Feb. 3.

The seminar, hosted by Robert Mulrooney and Mark Nichol of Dundee Securities in Courtenay, will be held at the Crown Isle ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

“We are fortunate to attract speakers from a national level,” says Mulrooney. “James Gauthier speaks with some of the best money managers in North America every day, getting firsthand information on what’s really going on in the markets. He gathers a tremendous amount of information that he’s going to share during this free seminar.”

Educating their clients has always been a key component of the philosophy at Dundee Securities. The annual Year Ahead Investment Presentation is an important part of their commitment to provide honest and forthright financial information.

“We always encourage investors to educate themselves, and that’s what this evening is all about,” says Mulrooney. “An informed investor is a confident investor, and a confident investor will always do better. I strongly believe that.”

Also speaking at Thursday’s seminar will be Marcus Berry, regional vice-president of Invesco Trimark, one of Canada’s largest investment management companies. Berry will introduce attendees to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and explain how they could work within a balanced portfolio.

“In layman’s terms, an ETF is a basket of securities that replicates an index, such as the Toronto Stock Exchange,” explains Mulrooney. “They’ve become very popular over the last three years, so we thought it was important that people know the truth behind them to better understand their benefits and potential pitfalls.

“I think people in the Comox Valley who are investing on their own might enjoy this opportunity to learn more about opportunities and themes in the years ahead,” he adds. “You’re going to walk away from this seminar with a better sense of where the markets are currently, and where they may be in the future.”
