Beloved Cumberland historian honored

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial decided to fund the establishment of the Ron Bannerman Memorial History Award. Every year in April, the Comox Valley School District Heritage Fair invites students in elementary schools to submit history projects that are then judged and recognized on the basis of merit. The late Ron Bannerman, a Cumberland native, who served as a teacher and administrator, was known as Mr. History of the Comox Valley before his untimely death in November of 2009. In Bannerman's honour, retired Cumberland Elementary School principal Cathie Gordon proposed the establishment of an award to recognize the work and enthusiasm for history of elementary students in the district. A medallion has been designed that will be presented to the students with the best projects at future heritage fairs. —Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial
